What is an immobiliser key (transponder key)?
An immobiliser key is a car key containing a microchip that transmits a unique code to the vehicle's immobiliser system. Without the correct signal, the engine will not start even if the physical key fits the lock.
Most modern vehicles in Singapore use immobiliser keys, which combine mechanical key cutting with electronic authentication. The microchip inside the key's head communicates wirelessly with a receiver unit in the car's steering column or dashboard. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the chip transmits its unique code. If the immobiliser system recognises the code, it allows the engine to start. If the code does not match, the fuel pump and ignition are disabled, making the vehicle impossible to operate.
This security feature prevents hotwiring and reduces vehicle theft. However, immobiliser keys cannot simply be cut by a regular key-cutting machine like older mechanical keys. A locksmith must programme the new key's chip to match your vehicle's immobiliser unit. This requires specialist equipment and knowledge of your car's security protocol, which varies by manufacturer and model year.
If you lose a transponder key or need a spare, you cannot visit a general hardware store. An automotive locksmith with programming tools and access to your vehicle's security codes is necessary to create a working replacement. The cost and time required depend on the key type and whether the immobiliser system itself needs recoding.
