What is a rim lock?

A rim lock is a cylindrical or deadbolt lock mounted on the surface of a door or gate rather than recessed into the door frame, commonly used on metal grilles and gate doors in Singapore.

A rim lock sits on the surface of a door or gate instead of being mortised (cut into) the frame. The lock body and cylinder are visible on one or both sides of the door, and the latch bolt extends into a striking plate on the frame. This design makes rim locks the default choice for metal grille doors, sliding gate doors, and other surfaces where cutting into the material would compromise structural integrity or aesthetics.

In Singapore, rim locks are standard on residential metal gates, security grilles, and commercial premises where surface mounting is more practical than mortising. They are quick to install, easy to repair or replace, and do not require the door or gate to be drilled or milled. Common variants include cylinder rim locks (pin tumbler types) and deadbolt rim locks, both available in single-sided and double-cylinder versions.

Rim locks suit gates and grilles because they work on surfaces that are too thin, too hard, or too valuable to cut into. A locksmith servicing residential and commercial doors in Singapore will work with rim locks regularly. If you need installation, rekeying, or repair on a rim lock, contact a residential locksmith provider who handles gate and grille security.
