What is a restricted keyway?

A restricted keyway is a patented key profile designed so that only authorised dealers and locksmiths can duplicate or manufacture keys, giving property owners tighter control over who holds copies.

A restricted keyway is a proprietary key design protected by patent. The profile of the key blade is unique to the lock manufacturer and cannot be legally copied without explicit authorisation from the rights holder. When a lock uses a restricted keyway, blank keys matching that profile are not sold publicly. Instead, only approved dealers and locksmiths registered with the manufacturer can produce duplicates.

In commercial buildings, restricted keyways form a critical part of access control strategy. They prevent unauthorised key duplication by tenants, contractors, or cleaning staff, reducing the risk of lost keys falling into wrong hands. Building managers and facility teams can track who has received copies through the authorised dealer network, maintaining a clear record of key holders. This is especially important in multi-tenant office buildings, secure storage facilities, and buildings handling sensitive operations.

Common restricted keyway systems in Singapore include those from major lock manufacturers such as ASSA ABLOY, Mul-T-Lock, and Medeco. Each system requires the owner to provide proof of authorisation before a locksmith can cut a key. When keys are lost, damaged, or staff turnover occurs, the property manager contacts an authorised commercial locksmith who verifies the request against ownership records before proceeding. This layer of verification strengthens security compared to standard keys available at any hardware shop.
