What is the difference between mortise and rim digital locks?

Mortise digital locks are embedded inside the door, while rim digital locks are mounted on the surface; each suits different door types and installation requirements.

Digital locks in Singapore homes come in two main body configurations based on where and how they are fitted to the door.

A mortise digital lock is built into the door itself, with the locking mechanism and electronics recessed inside the door edge. This design requires a mortise cavity cut into the door during manufacturing or by a locksmith. Mortise locks are common on solid wooden and aluminium doors, and they offer a neater, more integrated appearance since most of the hardware sits within the door rather than protruding from the surface.

A rim digital lock is mounted on the surface of the door, with the locking mechanism attached to the inner face. The bolt assembly and electronic module sit visibly on the door interior. Rim locks suit hollow wooden doors, metal gates, and situations where cutting into the door is not feasible. They are typically faster to install since no mortising is required.

Door material and construction determine which type is practical. Hollow core doors cannot safely accommodate a mortise lock, while some solid doors may only have mortise provisions already in place. Digital lock specialists in Singapore assess your door structure during consultation and recommend the appropriate body type to ensure both security and proper fit. Installation methods, internal wiring, and handleset compatibility all differ between the two, so choosing the correct type at the outset prevents costly retrofitting.
