What is a fire rated safe?

A fire rated safe is a secure container built to withstand high temperatures and flames for a specified duration, protecting documents and valuables from fire damage.

A fire rated safe uses insulation, steel construction, and specialized seals to protect contents during a fire. The rating is expressed as a time-temperature pair, such as "60/350" or "120/350", meaning the safe keeps its interior at 350 degrees Celsius or below for 60 or 120 minutes while exposed to external flames. This protects paper documents, photographs, and digital media from destruction.

The time rating tells you how long the safe performs its protective function during a fire event. A 30-minute rating suits brief residential fires, while 60-minute or 120-minute ratings are common for businesses storing large volumes of critical documents. The temperature rating (usually 350°C or 540°C depending on the safe model) indicates the maximum interior temperature the safe will reach, which is critical because paper begins to char around 230°C.

Fire rating is distinct from burglary rating. A burglary-rated safe resists forced entry through drilling, cutting, or impact, rated by time and tool type. A fire rated safe prioritizes thermal protection, not theft resistance. Many safes carry both ratings (for example, a safe might be both fire and burglary rated), but these require different construction features. A pure fire rated safe without a burglary rating may be easier to breach. If you store both sensitive documents and cash or jewelry, verify that your safe meets both standards. Locksmiths in Singapore can help you select and install safes suited to your specific protection needs.
