What is a euro cylinder lock?

A euro cylinder lock is a standardized keyed lock mechanism with a cylindrical profile, commonly fitted to HDB and condominium doors in Singapore, typically measured between 70-100 mm in total length.

The euro cylinder lock is the metal keyed mechanism you will find in most HDB flat doors and condominium units across Singapore. It sits within the door handle or deadbolt and operates by turning a key to retract or extend the locking bolts. The "euro" profile refers to the standardized cylindrical shape and internal pin mechanism, which became the industry standard across Europe and Asia.

These locks are measured in millimeters, typically ranging from 70 mm to 100 mm in total length. The measurement is taken from the edge of the escutcheon (the mounting plate) on one side to the edge on the other side. Common sizes in Singapore residential properties are 70/30 (70 mm outer, 30 mm inner) and 80/40, where the first number is the total length and the second is the distance from the outer face to the center of the cylinder. This standardization makes replacement and upgrading straightforward for locksmiths.

Euro cylinders remain relevant today because many homeowners choose to retain them when installing digital lock retrofits. A digital lock can be mounted alongside an existing euro cylinder, allowing you to keep mechanical key access while adding keyless entry. Locksmiths often need to assess whether a door's euro cylinder is compatible with digital lock housing and whether the existing frame can accommodate both systems without modification.
